This stately Spanish Colonial Revival masterpiece, designed by Claude B. Barton in 1928, combines all the best qualities of a classic Piedmont home: beautiful appointments, gracious high ceilings, and a wonderfully open floor plan—plus a completely unexpected delight downstairs. Everywhere you look, you see an abundance of care in design and craftsmanship. Despite its grand exterior, this home has a friendly California feel the moment you walk in to the magnificent entry hall. It’s easy to imagine living here.

You know you are in for a treat as you approach the intricate stuccowork that adorns the exquisite front door. As the door opens your eyes are filled with the masterful details that truly brings this home to life: beautiful wrought ironwork, both inside and out; a marvelous, hand painted, coffered ceiling in the entry; handcrafted, arched doorways, artisan tile and period lighting. The walls of oversized windows and French doors flood the home with light and vistas of the beautiful patios and formal garden. 227 Crocker Avenue embodies the best aspects of a formal home with its own unique warmth and grace. This is absolutely a one of a kind home!

Spaces flow from room to room in an exceptionally livable and modern fashion in this vintage home. The upstairs bedroom level has a spacious, open feel with room to exhale and take in the view of mature oaks and sycamore trees below. The generous landing at the top of the staircase features huge, hand carved beams, a spectacular leaded glass window and sitting area, and excellent spaces for hanging your favorite art pieces. This is no average hallway. The master suite to your right is just far enough away to provide a bit of privacy, and each of the three additional bedrooms has its own cheerful personality. Rounding out this floor is a large family room perfect for relaxation or play.

Downstairs is the big surprise: a unique “speakeasy” with a generous ballroom and separate bar. The walls in these spaces are adorned with fine-art impasto painting: in the ballroom, ladies from the ’20s frolic in period costumes; in the bar, images of fantastic visions prance across the walls. This space begs for a party and will certainly be the "go to" gathering place for all sorts of fun.

Location, location, location: from 227 Crocker Avenue it’s just over a mile to the famous Piedmont schools. There’s a bus stop a few blocks away. Hampton Field, with its baseball diamond, tennis and basketball courts, and Piedmont Play School is also just blocks away. And Lakeshore Avenue and Montclair shopping, plus easy freeway access—all are close by.

About the City of Piedmont

The independent city of Piedmont is one of the East Bay’s most sought-after communities. The town, measuring just two square miles, offers a wide variety of homes, from bungalows to mansions, wonderful parks, verdant neighborhoods, and marvelous views of the Bay and San Francisco beyond. It is often called the “queen of the hills.”

San Francisco magazine declared the town the “best place for kids” in a 2005 article. Its school district offers excellent public schools (Piedmont High School is one of the top high schools in the nation according to US News and World Report). Locally controlled emergency services and police are based in the center of a town measuring only one mile by two, so sub-five-minute response times on the part of police, fire, and medical personnel are commonplace.

Piedmont is both a neighborhood of San Francisco and the East Bay—with 20-minute express bus and casual carpool convenience to downtown SF—and a small independent municipality with excellent local control of its affairs. It is most of all a community of deep traditions, including a classic 4th of July parade and closed-street block parties, summer movies-in-the-park, an arts center, community pool, tennis and basketball courts and playfield, and kids’ sports organizations of all types. Mulberry’s Market is a central fixture in town, and the thriving Piedmont Center for the Arts features everything from classical music to rock, plays, and arts exhibits of every kind. Public-private partnerships, such as the Piedmont Beautification Foundation, have a long history of supporting the town and its beauty.

The adjacent Oakland districts of Montclair Village, Grand Avenue, Lakeshore Avenue, Piedmont Avenue, and Glenview provide everything from classic movie theaters to award-winning restaurants, singular boutiques, independent bookstores, and a wonderful farmers’ market on weekends. The town is well served by public transportation, access to local freeways is easy, and a pair of well-established “casual carpool” centers serve San Francisco commuters in fine fashion.

Centrally located in an ideal climate zone, Piedmont is convenient to the greater Bay Area, the Wine Country, and the Sierras.
